Hay-fever, known as 'Allergic Rhinitis' is an allergy to pollen, mould, or even dust-mite that feeds on dead skin cells.
A report from Allergy UK shows that about 20% of the population suffer from hay-fever and people with a family history of eczema or asthma are more prone to hay-fever.
The most common cause of hay-fever is the release of pollen during warm, dry, and windy weather in the summer/autumn months.

Sadly, there are no long term cures for this type of allergy. But several good hay-fever treatments are available which can lower symptoms and create a big difference to your daily life.
Many people manage hay-fever with a blend of nasal sprays, eye drops, and antihistamines, which can give relief from symptoms for up to 24-hours. Speak to a pharmacist or your GP about what may suit you.
Nasal sprays are effective when used regularly, however you have to be patient to see any benefits. They are most effective if you suffer from nose congestion during a dry season.
For dry or itchy eyes, eye drops can bring speedily relief. In small bottle form which is easy and convenient to carry around. Ideally it should be kept in a fridge.
Over-the-counter medications in tablet form include:

Antihistamines containing Diphenhydramine and Chlorpheniramine make you drowsy and best used at night. Avoid use of machinery or driving. Enables better sleep.
If you don't feel better from the use of home remedies or over-the-counter medication, we recommend speaking to your GP or a pharmacist. For very severe cases, your GP may refer you to a Consultant Immunologist.
What we can do is help you find out what you are allergic to. Our nurse-led allergy testing service uses laboratory blood tests to identify common allergens — including pollens, dust mites, moulds and pet dander — so you and your GP can plan how to manage your symptoms.
Please note that London GP Clinic provides allergy testing only. We do not prescribe medication or provide treatment — your test results can be shared with your GP, who can advise on suitable treatment options.
